GARAGE FLOOR coatings process

Estimate

When we arrive for your estimate, we'll meet with you to examine the current condition of your floor and discuss how you plan to use the floor in the future. We'll also talk to you about your budget, and then determine what flooring system will best suit your needs. Most floors take 1-2 days to complete.

Prep & Grind

All floors are prepped using either grinders with diamond blades or a shot blaster to profile the surface and prepare it for the coating to bond with. All of our prep equipment is attached to vacuums, which creates a dustless work environment. Extra precautions are taken to further contain dust when working on interior flooring projects.

Crack & Pit Fill

We now use a v-blade to open any existing cracks. This ensures that all cracks are cleaned out properly and are ready to accept filler. We use a two-part flexible joint filler. This material is expensive, but it works! This is the same material that is used to fill cracks on bridge spans here in Minnesota.

Second Grind

After about 15 minutes, the filler will be dry and ready to be ground flush to the floor.

Base Coat

We are now ready for the base coat. We apply a coat of tinted polyurea to the floor. Polyurea is a penetrating and flexible product, unlike epoxy, which dries hard like glass on the surface, and is prone to cracking and peeling. We do NOT use epoxy on garage floors.

Flake

Now we broadcast the blend of colored flakes that you've chosen across the floor. The floor will get covered to "rejection," or more than it needs.

Remove Excess Flakes & Raised Edges

After the floor is dry (between 1 to 2 hours, depending on weather), we use our floor scrapers to lightly scrape the floor to remove extra and raised flakes. We then recover all excess flakes and final vacuum the floor.

Clear Coat

Applying a clear polyaspartic top coat is the final step in the process. It is what gives the floor its beautiful shine and durable protection. After we apply the clear coat, you will need to wait 24 hours for foot traffic, 48 hours for vehicle traffic, and 72 hours before sliding contents across the floor. Also, no rubber mats should be used on the floor for the first 2 weeks.

Finished Floor

To care for your new floor, just wipe up anything that spills, and use warm soapy water for cleaning. Your new floor will last a lifetime.

NOTE: Homeowners are responsible for moving the contents out of the space before we arrive to complete the floor coating (and for up to 72 hours after the floor is complete). If you need a place to store your contents, we can facilitate use of a 10’x20’ storage unit that is dry and secure and that you can use for up to 30 days for $280.00.
