Guide: Favorite Interior Painting Products

Today on the blog, Twin Cities Resurfacing is going to share some of our favorite painting tools for interior painting projects.  We’ve been painting for a LONG time (as Twin Cities Resurfacing since 2008), serving customers all across the Twin Cities metro, so we’ve tried a lot of tools, materials, paints, and primers at projects from Andover to Edina to Woodbury to Minnetonka.  Like… a lot.  Some have been one and done, never to be purchased again, and others make our lives so much easier that we’ve decided we can’t live without them.  If you’re a DIY painter looking for some tricks of the trade from the pros, you’ve found the right blog.  Keep reading to learn more about some of the must have painting gear we use on interior painting projects all around the Minneapolis - Saint Paul metro area.

Painting, specifically interior painting (walls, ceilings, cabinets, doors, trim) is ALL about prep work… covering and masking surrounding surfaces, sanding, patching, etc.  The actual painting typically takes a fraction of the time it takes to prep the space.  For that reason, the first product we’d like to discuss is tape.  You might have seen advertisements for Blue Painter’s Tape and Green Frog Tape… but we’re here to tell you that we’ve found the best tape for all your interior painting needs: Intertape Polymer Group Premium Grade Low Tack Masking Tape.

This tape has incredibly low tack, meaning that it doesn’t quickly form an adhesive bond to the surface it’s placed on but rather manages to stay in place while still being able to be easily repositioned. It is fantastic for the masking of walls, woodwork, and windows, and can be used on lacquer or polyurethane-coated surfaces, unfinished wood, wallpaper, or freshly painted surfaces - ALL without damaging any surface it touches. It doesn’t leave a tape print on surfaces, removes easily, and leaves clean paint-break lines. It’s a fantastic product and we can’t recommend it enough for your next interior painting project. And if you’re interested in scheduling an estimate with Twin Cities Resurfacing to handle your interior painting project for you - whether you’re in Shoreview, Roseville, Lino Lakes, Mahtomedi, or anywhere in between, we’re here to help. Next up on our list of products we use at interior painting projects in Minneapolis and surrounding cities… Handy Paint Pails & Liners. These paint pails are fantastic for painting projects that require brushwork. Don’t make a mess of your paint can or paint tray by dragging your brush through it. Toss a Handy Paint Pail Liner into your Handy Paint Pail, pour in some paint, and get to work! The pails have ergonomic and adjustable handles to fit your hand, a lip where you can scrape your brush to get just the right amount of paint, and an interior magnetic brush holder so you don’t have to worry about where to set down your brush. When you’re done painting (or you’re ready to switch colors), simply toss the liner and your pail is ready for the next project. We wish we would have dreamed up this product!

If you’re unsure of which brush to pair with your Handy Paint Pail, we recommend the Purdy Pro-Extra Glide 2-1/2” Angle Paint Brush. These brushes hold more paint to allow you to get more done in between dips, are designed to be used with all types of paints, and have an incredibly smooth and even release… great for cutting in wall and ceiling intersections. If you’re looking for a brush used and trusted by professionals - this is the one. Make sure to take care of your brush by promptly cleaning it after use with warm water and allowing to air dry, or if you’re not quite done using it, keep it moist with paint by tightly wrapping it in plastic wrap (use your intertape to secure the wrap) for up to two days.

Last on our list of our favorite products for interior painting projects are Purdy White Dove Roller Covers. These can be used with all paints and stains, are capable of carrying a large quantity of paint to limit trips to the paint tray, and provide a completely lint free, high-quality finish. Another tip for painting that wall like a professional? Roll top to bottom, corner to corner.
